So Apparently I suck at Nettiquette

Lent starts tomorrow...Ash Wednesday.

In the past, I've given up chocolate and television (on two seperate occasions, not together). Apparently, I failed the chocolate one cuz I ate oreos. Seriously didn't think they were chocolate, but got given a hard time about it. When I gave up TV I ended up watching the news because it was around the time that stuff got intense with the "war against terrorism" I also watched a few movies which I rationalised because I said I was giving up TV, not movies. It's been awhile since I've done anything for lent, actually since high school. Well, I've got one night to think about whether I want to and what to give up.

Also, Mel has the flu, pretty bad I must say. I felt for awhile that I might have it too...but I think I'm ok now.

Here's looking at you, kid.

Have you ever considered taking something up, as opposed to giving something up?

And remember, Sunday's a day of rest from your lenten observance...

(and you know i didn't really mean that you sucked at nettiquite... :P)

KD is so from St. Ben's... am I right? huh? huh? am I? am I?

Either way, I'm with her. I'm taking a few things up for lent instead of giving anything up.

hehe, Katie I loved the nettiquite comment, so don't worry about it.

I had never thought of that actually, you get a day of rest on SUNDAY?? Man, I could have been eating chocolate every sunday, nice to know.

Yup, Kd goes to St. Benedicts. I'll think of something to take up guys. Good point, good point.

Mike, are you implying that you're very often nice, to a fault even?

Hee hee! Cheryl you made my day right there...

I was a little worried you guys hadn't really enjoyed the movie much, what with all the yelling about horses and donkeys

Mike being nice is an integral part of your character, it's impossible for you to give it up.

You're all making me feel slightly guilty about lent, seeings how I've never observed it, and don't see myself giving or taking anything up for the next 40 days. Hmmm perhaps I should give up studying....

Mandy! No! si tu no apprendes espaniol ahora, vas a estudiar para siempre! estudias estudias estudias! y me gusta espaniol, es un lengua muy hermosa

Wierd, Tom, I don't remember yelling about horses and donkeys, I'll be honest. But yes, Casablanca was a hit.

Then I give up hope... or caring.

I don't observe it either, Mandy. Though I'm considering it this year, except rather than giving up something I enjoy, I'm thinking of giving up a behaviour that I don't like - pessimism (though I rather like my pessimism), anger etc. That was part of an idea that Kara shared in chapel today. She's so smart.

Well I was being polite. It was something about riding two horses with only one donkey? I'm not sure I got it. ;)

It's definitely an excellent film.

I don't generally observe lent either. I think I'll give up sweets this year. I don't really eat them except on Sunday after papm so I guess that's kind of a lame thing to do. But it's a step. Also I think I'll start up guitar lessons. Anyone know any good guitar teachers?

Never been big on Lent, though I do miss the flow of the church seasons now that I'm not in ministry and a part of the planning of services for each season.

My family never did anything for Lent, so I've never really:

a) done anything for it, or
b) had a complex about that.

The coolest thing I've ever heard of for Lent was the one year at Bible college when one of the women decided to give a scripture verse to every woman who lived on campus. I still have it, and I still love the verse (1 Peter 3:3-4).

Dave - how'd you know I went to St. Ben's? Cuz I mentioned taking something up???

I don't remember that at all TOM!

Kyler, I think you should speak spanish for 40 days. You're almost there, and as a plus, by the end of it you would know when everyone's birthday, favourite color and they would all know you play soccer, hockey and volleyball.

Roz, I took guitar lessons once when I was like 8. I tried to get my teacher fired so I wouldn't have to go back. Still offering?

KD, yea, the taking something up gave it away. If I remember correctly Jamie is pushing the taking up something for lent. I'm taking his advice and reading a Psalm every morning :P

I actually would have suggested taking something up for lent regardless. i think it helps people get into the spirit of lent more.

i mean, the whole practice is about concentrating on God and the sacrifice that Jesus made, and I think it's easy to just give something up without remembering the point: when you would usually have done X, you are to turn your attention to God/Jesus.

It's much easier to think about what we're *supposed* to be concentrating on when we've taken something up, I think.

Yeah, I’ve done both – and I found that taking something up was a lot harder to stick to. So I’m copping out on the harder this year and giving something up – and I agree there’s no point in doing it at all unless you know why you’re doing it.
Giving up caffeine has spurred me to more prayer in a: ‘Lord, please take away this headache or I may just cut my head off entirely’, kind of way.
Seriously though, it’s only been a day but it’s already been a good discipline.
So, I think there’s value in both.

Cheryl, you don't remember that? I even made reference to it on some elses blog, saying that Melanie couldn't ride the "having a boyfriend" horse and "going to singles parties" horse with one ass. Tom, really there's no need to insert the term donkey. We weren't talking about donkeys. We were refering to bums. Buttocks. Sit bones. And so forth.
It was Melanie who said it during Casablanca, but we were all thinking it.
And yes, Casablanca was a good movie.

agreed. It's totally going to be harder to be consistent with taking something up. But probably a whole lot easier to remember why. So... that's where I'm going this year.

Roz, Tom. I must have been too into the movie to have heard what you said. All I remember is shushing you guys once.

I'm glad to hear you were so absorbed, Cheryl. I actually thought you and Mel had fallen directly asleep by the end

well the first time I thought I was being clever, referencing such a quotable quote in a way that nobody else would understand.

plus I try not to say or type the word 'ass'...

aww, crap
